"I pay homage to all the women who quilted anonymously long before our voices were recognized as valid and while this medium served as documentation of Herstory" - Lynne Marie
These textiles are quilts and they are intended to be a progressive empowering positive image of women. For the artist, they are receptive objects functioning as a covering shelter — piecing comfort sometimes for the body and always for the soul.
In these artworks, the spoken word manifests itself visually, the quilt is symbolically the embodiment of its maker and/or recipient(s). The form of the fabric is liken to skin, pierced and marked ceremoniously as documentation for life's passages. The metaphor of the quilt speaks as covering and shelter for the individual soul made from salvaged fragments of one's own life.
Through her tools — needle and thread, the artist mended herself and used her art as a personal way of recovery. |
