The childhood world Adela Leibowitz presents in her work contradicts the one of fairy tales. Here the mood is dark and gloomy. Leibowitz's environment itself is culled from such disparate sources as theatre backdrops and childhood dioramas to create imaginary spaces that are simultaneously recognizable yet suggestive of unreal realms. It is perhaps the antithesis of what one would expect as a depiction of childhood. The forest is intimidating and the little girls seem to be in an unsafe, almost dangerous environment. There are no bright colors to represent a cheerful atmosphere, the naive girls are not destined to become princess and the viewer is not assured that a "Happily Ever After Ending" is guaranteed after all.
