BEHIND THE DUNES

BY NICK HOLDSTOCK, LRB BLOG
In 2002 the photographer Lisa Ross was taken to the edge of the Taklamakan Desert in western China by her driver. She did not know why, but there was a path in the sand, and so she followed it, over the dunes.

Influential Women of the Month

Zurichsee Connections names Kashya Hildebrand one of its influential women of the month. "She is deeply affected by her Pakistani heritage and the cultural divide between Pakistan and the West. In addition, her participation in the first Dubai art fair 7 years ago broadened her vision dramatically: she recognized the burgeoning talent of emerging artists from the Middle East and Iran. She found art could become a conduit and bridge for cultural exchange."

NUIT BLANCHE VIDEO

On Saturday 12 October 2013 from 7pm - 3am, Nuit Blanche Video 2013 will take place for the first time across galleries in Central London. Over the course of an evening, members of the public will be able to view the exhibited works of French video artists in the windows of some of the British capital’s best-known art galleries.

Kashya Hildebrand is proud to join leading London galleries and will be presenting Ange Leccia’s ‘La Mer’. Comments gallery founder Hildebrand: "I am delighted to take part in the inaugural London Nuit Blanche, which provides a wonderful platform for intercultural exchange between France and the UK. Ange Leccia’s ‘La Mer’ presents a beautiful aquatic landscape in a contemporary setting, which is very much in line with the direction of the gallery. I love the concept of Nuit Blanche as it brings new energy to the Fitzrovia area, and we hope to participate in further initiatives such as this in the future."

Leccia and Kashya Hildebrand will be joining works by artists including Arnaud Dezoteux, Pierre Huyghe, Sophie Calle, Cyprien Gaillard and Ivan Argote at galleries like The Photographer’s Gallery, White Cube, Marlborough Contemporary, Sprüth Magers and Victoria Miro’s new Mayfair space.

The public will be able to map the city walking from one gallery to the next with the chance to discover the French contemporary video art scene. Nuit Blanche Video originally came to life in the French capital and has already proven to be a successful part of Paris’ annual dusk-til-dawn arts festival Nuit Blanche.

"We are thrilled to be able to bring Nuit Blanche Video to London. Our aim is to create a reciprocal arrangement with Parisian galleries and exhibit the works of British artists next year so as to strengthen cultural ties between the two cities," say Marie Shek, Yasmine Datnow and Maïa Morgensztern, the organisers behind Nuit Blanche Video 2013.

LONDON GALLERY OPENS

Kashya Hildebrand Gallery opened its doors last week on 26 June 2013 with a solo exhibition of new works by Iranian artist Reza Derakshani. The Pink House Stories saw some 400 people attend the launch, with more than 125 people attending a private dinner at the Hildebrand’s residence following the opening.

Hildebrand has made a name for herself on the arts scene with a gallery programme that blends artists from the East and West, alongside a mandate to discover and foster fresh talent. Her consistent presence at art fairs around the globe may have already introduced Hildebrand to London collectors, as the strong attendance numbers of the inaugural attest.

Visitors to the gallery saw new paintings by lauded Iranian Contemporary artist Derakshani, who addresses the deep social and cultural issues affecting contemporary Iran. He has gained worldwide recognition for his beautiful and nuanced studies – sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract, but always improvisational and spontaneous – which are political without being didactic. The Pink House Stories is an exploration, lamentation and celebration of the Iranian current condition - and is particularly timely given the country's recent elections. The works will be on display at Kashya Hildebrand London gallery until 31 August 2013.
