Robert Schaberl | FIXATION
March 9 – April 8, 2006
In his series “Fixation,” Austrian born artist Robert Schaberl, focuses on a single subject- the circle, an archetype amongst all other forms.
Robert Schaberl creates concentrated, meditative forms of impressive power and depth. The highly intense coats of paint lie on top of each other suggesting an endless color space, which dissolves the two-dimensional boundary of the canvas, opening out into the infinitive.
Color, light, space and time appear to flow together in a concentric centrifugal form. The interplay between interior and exterior, open and closed, generates an ambivalent tension, which attracts the viewer while at the same time keeping him/her at a distance.
“I see my paintings as objects in space, objects without a clear color-definition: A painting is not just one single painting. It is several at the same time. The picture prompts the viewer to keep moving because when viewed from different angles it appears in a totally different light.”Robert Schaberl, Vienna 2004
The change in light affects the perception of the paintings. At first, the work seems monochromatic, but in fact Robert Schaberl paints his “fixation” in different color variations. While rotating the canvas slowly, the artist applies 50 –70 razor thin layers of acrylic paint.
“Fixation” is Robert Schaberl’s first solo show at Kashya Hildebrand Gallery, NY
